October’s Book:

Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women's Anger by Soraya Chemaly

"A transformative book urging twenty-first century-women to embrace their anger and harness it as a tool for lasting personal and societal change.

Women are angry, and it isn’t hard to figure out why.

We are underpaid and overworked. Too sensitive, or not sensitive enough. Too dowdy or too made-up. Too big or too thin. Sluts or prudes. We are harassed, told we are asking for it, and asked if it would kill us to smile. Yes, yes it would.

Contrary to the rhetoric of popular “self-help” and an entire lifetime of being told otherwise, our rage is one of the most important resources we have, our sharpest tool against both personal and political oppression. We’ve been told for so long to bottle up our anger, letting it corrode our bodies and minds in ways we don’t even realize. Yet our anger is a vital instrument, our radar for injustice and a catalyst for change. On the flip side, the societal and cultural belittlement of our anger is a cunning way of limiting and controlling our power.

We are so often told to resist our rage or punished for justifiably expressing it, yet how many remarkable achievements in this world would never have gotten off the ground without the kernel of anger that fueled them? Rage Becomes Her makes the case that anger is not what gets in our way, it is our way, sparking a new understanding of one of our core emotions that will give women a liberating sense of why their anger matters and connect them to an entire universe of women no longer interested in making nice at all costs.

Following in the footsteps of classic feminist manifestos like The Feminine Mystique and Our Bodies, Ourselves, Rage Becomes Her is an eye-opening book for the twenty-first-century woman: an engaging, accessible credo offering us the tools to re-understand our anger and harness its power to create lasting positive change."

About Suzanne:

Ten years ago, Suzanne walked out of a yoga class onto a busy city street and noticed how vibrant the world is even on an ordinary day. It was a natural high she decided to never give up. She became a yoga teacher because she wanted to introduce everyone to the technology of yoga and meditation that unlocks the natural high waiting to be ignited in their bodies. Suzanne has studied at two of the country’s leading yoga retreat and education centers, Yogaville Satchidanda Ashram and Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. She completed a 200-hour Kundalini Yoga certification at Lighthouse Yoga, a 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga certification with Faith Hunter and studied contemplative prayer at the Shalem Institute. Suzanne currently teaches a weekly Kundalini meditation and yoga class.

About Priscilla:

Growing up Priscilla was always observing. In her observations she realized that most women didn’t evoke the zest for life that she felt was possible. She studied Cultural Anthropology & Spanish at UC Berkeley, driven by a fascination of how other cultures live life. One day, she came to an enlightened realization that not only did she absolutely loves her senses and sensory-based activities but that people lived numb to them and their bodies in general. She had an inkling that this was a key to living a robust life. She started reading voraciously to gain knowledge on the issue at hand. Her search led her to read books on somatics, yoga, embodiment, feminism, tantra and more. She is currently receiving a certification in Feminine Embodiment Coaching and is founder of The Lavender Junkie, a guide to sensuous, embodied living as a woman. She leads The Art of Sensuous Living & other popular workshops across the DMV area and coaches individual clients.

September’s Book:

How to Be an Adult in Love: Letting Love in Safely and Showing It Recklessly

We were made to love and be loved. Loving ourselves and others is in our genetic code. It’s nothing other than the purpose of our lives—but knowing that doesn’t make it easy to do. We may find it a challenge to love ourselves. We may have a hard time letting love in from others. We’re often afraid of getting hurt. It is also sometimes scary for us to share love with those around us—and love that isn't shared leaves us feeling flat and unfulfilled.

David Richo provides the tools here for learning how to love in evolved adult ways—beginning with getting past the barriers that keep us from loving ourselves, then showing how we can learn to open to love others.

Tarot AF: 4-Hour Course

Tarot AF: 4-Hour Course

Tarot AF: 4-Hour Course
95.00

We’ve all seen it depicted in the movies: the visit to the carnival, or to the shop with the neon sign, or to the mysterious old woman outside the medieval village.  She performs a tarot reading, ominously turning over each card one by one, until it comes time for the last card – Death!  And after several more plot developments the ill-fated character eventually meets her demise, unable to escape fate.

That’s definitely not how tarot works.  It doesn’t have to be creepy, it definitely isn’t going to tell you when you’re going to die, and it doesn’t require a visit to an old-timey carnival.  Any of us can learn to read tarot cards and to employ them as a practical and effective tool for checking in with ourselves, organizing our thoughts, and helping others sort out their emotions.  And yes, sometimes it actually will tell you (with uncanny accuracy) if that person you like has a crush on you or if it’s a good idea to accept that new promotion.

This class is designed for anyone and everyone who is curious about tarot and looking to learn more about this old but not-as-ancient-as-you’ve-been-told divination practice.  While it can take years to perfect the art of reading the cards, this four hour (minus 20 minute break) class will give you a strong primer on everything you need to know to begin your tarot practice and expand your reading skills going forward.

No prior experience of any kind with tarot is necessary.

Direct any questions to wovenpsyche@gmail.com

What to Expect

Learn the basics that you need to get started on your tarot journey.  In addition to providing interactive exercises and hands on reading experience, this workshop will cover:

o  The underlying history, structure and logic of the Tarot
o   Preparing to perform a tarot reading
o   Going beyond the basic card meanings in tarot books
o   How to apply card meanings in the context of a spread
o   Are tarot spreads even necessary?
o   The roles of imagery and intuition
o   Exercises and resources for further learning

How to prepare

If you already own a tarot deck, please bring it.  If not, decks will also be available for attendees to borrow.  You will need paper and a writing utensil to take notes; tarot journals will be available for purchase.  This event is BYOB.

Optional: Prepare ahead of time by familiarizing yourself with the individual card meanings.  A good first resource is the little white book or companion book that may have come with your deck, though these vary in depth and quality.  If you don’t have your own deck or would like a different resource, I personally really like the card meaning descriptions at biddytarot.com.

Course Presented By: Emily, Woven Psyche

About Emily: Emily has been reading tarot cards for over a decade, and is a founding member and current co-facilitator of the Capital Tarot Society.  Emily launched her small business, Woven Psyche, in 2017 to offer an accessible, down-to-Earth approach to tarot and other self care practices.  Woven Psyche is dedicated to demystifying the mystical, creating a sense of everyday magic, exploring the sacred feminine, offering enriching social experiences, and to encouraging mindfulness and self-care through tarot and like-minded practices.
